This month we are excited to feature our very first comic book artist and writer, Ronny Creates. He is the founder and CEO of Radical Komics. Ronny doesn’t limit his creative talent to the pages of his comic books. He also carries his profound ideas into the real world. He lives a lifestyle that embodies the heart and soul of what superheroes stand for: justice, truth, and making a difference in people’s lives.
“Art gives people something to believe in. It connects, heals, and empowers.” — Ronny Creates
An early start:
While many artists need time to test out different art forms, Ronny locked onto his craft early on in his journey. He started illustrating when he was just a kid, fell in love with comics, and knew that was his ultimate calling. It’s no surprise considering he grew up on some of the coolest movies and shows including Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies, Justice League, and Batman: The Animated Series.
“Comics allow me to build whole worlds and bring characters like All-Star and Wolf Shinobi to life page by page.” — Ronny Creates
Growing up, Ronny gravitated towards some of the greatest artists in comic book history. One of his biggest influences is Jack Kirby, whom he admires for his sense of energy and imagination that “built the DNA of modern comics.”
“Image Comics showed me that independence and ownership are possible in this industry, and creators like James O’Barr taught me how to pour emotion and personal pain into a story. That combination of raw honesty and bold creativity inspires everything I do.” — Ronny Creates
Thriving as an artist:
Ronny works in both traditional and digital media. He pulls inspiration from both fiction and real life. His illustrations possess strong imagery, bold primary colors, and captivating emotions. His method starts with sketching to music to set the tone — typically movie scores or something soulful. He begins mapping out his stories by focusing on the narrative first, then creating thumbnails while visualizing everything cinematically before completing the final illustrations.
Ronny’s work has been exhibited in several museums, including the High Museum of Art. He thrived in the art community when he became the cartoonist for The Hornet Tribune at Alabama State University. It was there that he was honored with the title of Best Artist/Illustrator at the Southeast Journalism Conference. He has even been featured on his local news stations!
Meaningful work:
Two of Ronny's creations that hold special meaning to him are All-Star #1 and Wolf Shinobi.
He describes All-Star #1 as representing the start of his journey as a creator. The book was inspired by his love for heroes in both fiction and real life who stood for truth and justice. The main character is John Birmingham AKA All-Star, a man who lost his son and later was granted the power of the stars. This power he channels to protect his community and defend against the corrupt and unjust.
“All-Star draws from classic icons like Superman, Captain America, and John Stewart Green Lantern, but also from real-world heroes like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.” — Ronny Creates
In addition, Wolf Shinobi holds personal meaning to him due to its representation of internal strength. It’s a story about personal demons, restraint, and transformation.
“He’s an anti-hero born from pain, representing the darkness we all have to learn to master. Together, they show two sides of heroism: light and shadow, hope and struggle.” — Ronny Creates
Beyond the page:
Not only does Ronny spread his message for a better future through his original characters and powerful storytelling, but he takes it a leap further by acting as a real-world superhero himself. He is an advocate for helping those in need, a teacher, and an artist who inspires others to spread as much good as they can. Ronny doesn’t shy away from discussing social issues and takes a strong ethical stance toward building a healthy community. He uses his platform to bring up topics that can be hard to stomach, including police brutality, racism, internal struggles, and corruption. He believes that real-life experiences are what keep his stories grounded and meaningful.
Community:
Ronny expresses that his aim is to inspire people to face their struggles while still doing good and to remind people that heroes can come from anywhere. He is active in interacting with fans and followers on his socials. You can find important updates, art, and behind-the-scenes looks into new products on both his TikTok and YouTube channel. You can chat with him in real time when he goes live and hear about all of the cool things his collective is up to. Most recently, his publishing company has released Radical Komics Magazine. In his videos, he is often heard saying his empowering catchphrase:
“Be bold, be daring and most importantly be radical.” — Ronny Creates
Words of Wisdom:
Ronny’s advice to upcoming artists inspires us to be confident and innovative. He stresses the importance of individual voice in one’s craft and the usage of art to create positive change.
“Create what matters to you. Study your craft but never lose your voice. Don’t wait for approval — build your own lane. The greats like Kirby, O’Barr, and the founders of Image Comics didn’t follow trends; they created movements. That’s the mindset I live by every day.” — Ronny Creates
